Fire-protective systems in high buildings sometimes experience severe water hammer from backflow of a pressure tank when the automatic control shuts down the fire pump. These special check valves are FM Approved only for use in the discharge of a fire pump where conditions may be expected to cause serious water hammer with the usual swing type valve.
